Episode 1: The Second Genesis

(The scene is a room of pitch darkness. There is no light, but instead a haunting echo that resonates throughout this darkness.
But in an instant, a familiar black monolith appears out of the darkness. It's writings are clearly readable, indicating what it represents: SEELE)Keel: The time is to act now
(As if by command, several more of these black monoliths appear out of the darkness. One after the other, forming into a circle. Once the circle is completed, there are twelve monoliths in this realm of darkness)
SEELE 04: Ikari, you have helped us take this project to it's end
SEELE 10: Yet...
SEELE 07: He has failed us at the same time! Evangelion Unit 00: Destoyed
SEELE 05: Evangelion Unit 01.. Lilith's other
SEELE 09: Has reached it's final stage.. this was an expected occurance. And yet he still continues to use it as a mere weapon?
SEELE 07: (continuing on) The Lance of Longinus: Lost. Retrieval is possible
SEELE 04: Yet very costly
SEELE 07: The Fifth Child: Dead
The Second Child: Inactive
The Fourth Child: Inactive
SEELE 02: To think that Ikari was responsible for all of these damages! Why on earth was he chosen to be the Commander of Nerv?
Keel: Because, he was the only at the time that could achieve our goals. He has destroyed all of the Angels, just as we had wished to happen. But now Ikari, you have served your purpose. And now, death shall be now upon you..
SEELE 12: I'm afraid it will have to wait..
Keel: What? Explain!
SEELE 12: There has been news going around. Tokyo-3 is now being reconstructed. The United Nations has allowed the project to be carried out.
SEELE 09: He's using it as a cover! A shield to protect him from death! We should've have eliminated him and Nerv the moment the boy was killed! They would've never expected it to happen!
Keel: (calmly) We shall have to wait then. There is no need for us to rush into this. If we do, we will be revealed, and our hopes and realizations will be lost. So we shall have to be patient, at the price of letting him live a little longer, then we'll eliminate him when the time comes. Prepare yourself Ikari: For SEELE will not tolerate this!
(Then, the black towering monoliths disappear one by one, returning to the darkness from which they came, and the echoing lonliness that was present before resonates throughout the black room, louder than before..

(Meanwhile, far away from the darkness, Commander Gendo Ikari and Sub Commander Kouzou Fuyutsuki, are in Ikari's large and spacious office. Gendo, as usual is in his seat, with his head nested between his clasped hands, his elbows on top of his desk. Fuyutsuki on the other hand, is on the opposite side of the desk, facing towards the Commander.)
Fuyutsuki: SEELE are probably aware that the construction of the city is now under way.
Gendo: Excellent. The old men are underestimating us.. this would probably halt their schedule for a little while.
Fuyutsuki: You mean about the rumoured attack that was going to be unleashed onto us once that boy was destroyed? How can we even prove that there would be some sort of attack coming?
Gendo: We don't need to find out. We are taking the proper safety measures. If an attack was going to occur now, we are safe for the moment, now that the city is acting as a shield for us.
Fuyutsuki: (turns to face the open scenery outside) So are you still intending on repairing the Evangelions and terminal dogma?
Gendo: Indeed. Even though the Angel threat is gone at the moment, precautions have to be taken. With the old men possibly wanting our heads for taking such actions, we have to be on our guards
Fuyutsuki: But if your planning to repair the Evangelions, who is going to pilot them? With the Fifth Child dead, and the Second Child now in hospital and the First is clearly not fit to pilot yet.. that leaves us with the Third but even then.. do you think he'll even pilot it?
Gendo: If he chooses to pilot Unit 01 again, it will be a benefit to us. If he doesn't, then he's free to leave Tokyo-3.
Fuyutsuki: Is he just another tool to you Ikari? He's your son for God's sake! Don't you even care for him one bit?
Gendo: ....
(The commander continues to remain silent for several moments, as he remembers all of the times where he has ordered his son to do something against his own morals..
Flashback:
Gendo: Why aren't you attacking?
Shinji: (inside entryplug) I can't! If there's another human inside, we have to help him! I can't kill another human being!!
Gendo: It's him or you
Shinji: NO! I'D RATHER DIE!!
Gendo: DAMMIT! Relay all power to the dummy system!
(Moments later, Shinji Ikari realises that he's no longer in control, as Evangelion Unit 01 comes to life by itself, destroying the very monster that is in front of him)
Shinji: NO!!! MAKE IT STOP!!! MAKE IT STOP!!! MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!)
Gendo: ... It's irrelevant if he's my son.. Ever since Yui died.. I couldn't face him again..
Fuyutsuki: So your running away from your own son? By treating him as if he was expendable?
(Fuyutsuki's question echoes in Ikari's mind for what would seem like an eternity. He knows that what he just said is perfectly true.. but he does not wish to admit to this fact.. and spins the chair facing away from Fuyutsuki)
Gendo: That will be all Professor...
Fuyutsuki: Hmph..
(Fuyutsuki walks away from the the office. As his footsteps continue to echo in the incredibly spacious office of Gendo Ikari, Fuyutsuki continues to think away about why Ikari is acting this selfish about the current situation. He reaches for the door and exits, slamming the door shut.
Once the Sub Commander had left, Ikari gets up from his chair and walks over to where Fuyutsuki had stood and looks out into the scenery of trees and green covered hills. For that very moment, he felt like he was just a regular person who actually cared.)Gendo: Forgive me Shinji.. for what you will have to now go through again.. Forgive me Yui, for putting our son through all this torture and hell.. but it's for the best... just to see you once again....

(Just outside of Gendo Ikari's office, Fuyutsuki takes a brief look at the door behind him, before he walks off to continue with his work for the rest of the day)
Fuyutsuki: (thinking) Ikari you arrogant fool, must you make those around you suffer? Even your own son?

(Far from NERV HQ, a young boy is standing on the shore of what used to be Tokyo-3. Shinji Ikari, pilot of the unstable Evangelion Unit 01, stares out into vast emptiness of the giant lake. With the kind of hardships that one like him has been through, one would have gone insane already.. Shinji isn't like that.. or wasn't like that.. The moment Shinji had killed his only one true friend, who happened to be the last Angel, it had driven the boy to his limits.)
Shinji: (to himself) Now that Karwou is gone.. I'm all alone again.. Misato has isolated herself from the rest of the world.. and Ayanami will never be the same again.. and Asuka....
(The last name he says out aloud imprints into his mind. Various images of the red headed girl race through in his head. From the very first time they had met, there was something there.. perhaps not a relationship, but a fairly close friendship.. but it never really did take into proper form.. with Asuka calling Shinji names.. and even then Shinji questions why Asuka does that?)
Shinji: (continuing) Asuka's now in hospital... and I haven't even gone to see her yet.. should I? Should I go? Will it actually achieve something? ... maybe there might be something there that I might find..
(Shinji rubs his now red eyes, which has been caused by crying. He walks away from the large lake, and decides to walk home first, before he decides to go to the hospital.
He continues walking along, with so many unanswered questions on his mind.. one of the most important ones being his continued future with Evangelion.)Shinji: (thinking) EVA has done nothing but bring pain and suffering myself and those around me.. is it even worth it anymore? It made me hurt Toji, and kill Karwou..
(But in this state of self reflection, another voice in his mind interrupts)
Child's voice: No.. the Eva didn't make you kill Karwou.. you did it by choice
Shinji: That's not true!
Child's Voice: Is it? Or are you just denying what you know deep inside is the fact? The moment you discovered that Karwou was an Angel, you wanted to kill him. You know this!
Shinji: I did it because he was the enemy! If I didn't, we would've all died!
Child's Voice: So you're saying you did it for the greater good?
Shinji: No.. I did it.. because he asked me to.. he knew that if I didn't.. he would've destroyed us all..
Child Voice: Why did he wish for death? was it because of you? Or something else?
Shinji: He wished for it because he said to me, that we're not the existence that should die...
Child's voice: Which meant what..?
(And it's in this thought, that he discovered the true meaning, behind Karwou's choice of action.)
Shinji: He knew that we as individuals have a reason to continue with our lives! He saw that humanity had value.. that's why he stopped from destroying us... he believed that we have the will to live!!
(Almost as if he had been renewed of conscience and guilt, he stops heading towards the direction of the apartment block, and turns another direction to head go to the hospital. He slow picks up the pace to a fast walk.. and eventually to a sprint. No longer does he have regrets.. he realises now that ever since Karwou's death, he had never been alone at all..)

(Meanwhile, inside the apartment of Misato Katsuragi, there is nobody in any of the other rooms.. but the noise of keys being typed away can be heard beyond one of the closed doors.
Inside, Misato is on her computer, constantly typing key after key after key. Several windows on her monitor open up.. and her face turns from determination to sheer frustration.)Misato: ARGH!! (slams her fist on the table) I can't find anything from here..
(She turns away from her computer monitor and takes a look at her alarm clock that is just beside her computer)
Misato: ... I still have an hour or so before I go.. (sighs) But I still don't understand why Commander Ikari is ordering reconstruction of Units 01 and 02? The last Angel has been defeated.. so what's the reason? Is he planning to use Evangelion for war purposes?
(The woman stops what she's doing, ejects a disk from the computer, and turns the machine off. She gets off the chair and stretches for a few moments, after hours of non stop searching..)
Misato: I wonder what's happened to Ritsuko?.. If the Commander is reparing the Evangelions, then that might mean....

(Far from Misato's apartment, in a dimly light room, the Head of Project E, Ritsuko Akagi, is sitting on her bed.. not knowing what to do now. After willfully destroying the Dummy system, Gendo Ikari had her arrested and placed into jail..
With nothing else to do, the woman lies on her bed and stares at the flourescent light above her.. thinking of what her future may hold after her actions)Ritsuko: (quietly to herself) The least that bastard can do is kick me out of here.. but I know I'll be getting executed for this.. with that boy now dead, there's no reason for me to be here..
(Suddenly, faint echoing footsteps are heard from beyond her cell. She would take a look at who it is, but because the door, the only form of communication she would possibly have to anyone else, has no clear windows. However, she can hear the faint voices of two people.. one of them was a voice that she could clearly recognise.)
Ritsuko: (thinking).. Ikari..
(That name imprints into her mind, and her loathing hatred for him comes back up to surface... but she manages to keep her anger in control..
The door opens up, and a man wearing a black Nerv Uniform, orange glasses is standing just outside the doorway. Upon closer look, the man has brown hair, and brown beard. His expression still stays that cold expressionless stare that he always had.)
Ritsuko: Why Commander.. it's such an... unexpected suprise to see you here..
Gendo: You may disperse with the pleasantries.. I'm here because...
Ritsuko: (interrupting) because you have found a new a use for me, isn't it?
(An uneasy silence fills the jail cell, and it's Ritsuko who breaks the silence)
Ritsuko: On what conditions?
Gendo: The charges will be dropped. You will be allowed to return to your work as soon as possible. However, you will be under heavy surveilance. I suggest that if you want to continue being the head of the Project, you will do as your told...
Ritsuko: Without me, we would all be dead by now
Gendo: ......
Ritsuko: Very well. I accept the conditions
Gendo: Good.. the guards will escort you out in a few moments. While the paper work is being completed, think twice before jeopardizing our projects. If we go down, then so will you...
Ritsuko: ....
(Ikari turns around and, without any farewells to the Doctor, he exits. The door closes with heavy thud, and Ritsuko is left by herself again, thinking about the Commander's offer..
But she becomes sad and guilty, when she thinks about her only friend who happens to be working at NERV)
Ritsuko: I hope Misato... I hope that she can forgive me. And I hope that she watches herself.. she's been searching into the MAGI's datafiles for a long time.. I just wish that she doesn't..... end up like Kaji..

(The scene is now NERV's private hospital, and many of the nurses are conversing over the girl who is in a coma. But now that someone has actually decided to visit the girl ever since she was admitted, there is more need for discussion)
Nurse A: You mean that someone is now visiting the girl?
Nurse B: Yes. The very first one.. I wonder who he is?
Nurse A: Must be another one of those pilots. I wonder if any of the other pilots are going to visit?
Nurse C: There's only one other besides the boy and the patient. That blue haired girl. While the other one.. he was pretty much in no condition to continue ever since that black robot got torn to pieces.. so he chose to no longer pilot.
Nurse B: (sighs) These kids are winding up in hospital more than anyone else does.. why are they the ones to suffer?
Nurse A: They have no choice I suppose.. if they said that saving the world from those weird monsters would be easy, then I guess anyone could've done it..
(An uneasy silence arises among them)
Nurse C: So what will happen if the girl doesn't wake up?
Nurse A: I assume that they'll keep her here. Here life signs are pretty much stable
Nurse B: It's not a physical condition.. it's all in the mind.. especially with this one..
Nurse: A: Kids these days.....

(Few floors up from the reception area of the Private hospital, Shinji Ikari is walking along the hallway looking for the person that might help him.. He wonders if he'll find anything.. once he finds the fellow pilot, Asuka Langely Sorhyu)
Shinji: (looks at the door) Well here it is.. room 303..
(The boy reaches for the door handle, but at the last instant, stops only inches away from reaching the handle, hesitant as to what might happen)
Shinji: (thinking) What should I say if she's awake? what should I do? I haven't spoken to her in days.. there should be lots of things to talk about with her.. it should make it easier to avoid the topic of Ayanami..
(Without a second doubt, he reaches for the door and opens it. Expecting to see the cheery, and wild Asuka, he sees nothing more than a lifeless girl that is lying on a hospital bed. Shinji's face changes from nervousness to sheer shock at the site of the girl that is before her)
Shinji: ...
(Silence)
Shinji: Asuka...
(Silence)
Shinji: DAMMIT ASUKA!! WAKE UP!!!
(He grabs Asuka by the shoulders, and starts shaking her.. but there is still no life in the girl, as she continues to stare away at the ceiling above her.
The boy stops shaking the girl, and instead grabs a nearby chair, bringing it closer to the bed. He takes a seat and looks at the unconcscious girl. He begins to speak to her as if she was awake and listening)Shinji: There's nobody here to talk to anymore.. I haven't talked to Misato as much as I should.. I've been avoiding everybody.. ever since Naghisa died.. I thought I would be able to talk to you..
Asuka: ...
Shinji: But your in no better condition.. I can't talk to Ayanami, or Misato.. and I still don't know If I should continue to pilot Eva.. It's just not the same without you around... I just want you to wake up, and come back home, so everyone can return to normal again..
(He continues to look at the girl, and still, no changes in Asuka's condition are present.. He stands up and is about to leave.. but then realises that he has no where else to go.. He doesn't want to go back home.. or even talk to Rei..
Instead, he goes back and sits on the chair, waiting for Asuka to reawaken from whatever nightmares she's going through. He doesn't care if he will be here for a while.. he has nothing else to lose..)
