Chapter 6.
Shinji was dragged by Misato for
about half an hour as they searched for some decent protection.
Experience had told her that many of the Angels were dumb.
Powerful of course, but still, dumb! However... this new Angel
was different. It possessed human thoughts and emotions and
wasn't at all stupid. Asuka and Misato checked room after room in
search of survivors, but more accurately, a good place to hide.
Both Misato and Asuka believed that Matt would hunt them down in
some way or another. Although, Asuka was still emotionally
attached to him and was reluctant to believe the series of events
that had just unfolded. In not too short a time, they found the
perfect place. A small utility room, that had been hurriedly
abandoned at the first instance of red alert.
"This will have to do for now." Misato began, as she
inspected the room through a small crack in door. "Asuka,
Rei. Could ya's help me open this? Door seems to be jarred...
Wait a minute. Where's Rei?!" and she looked around
curiously. Asuka turned surprised. Rei had disappeared without
them knowing it. Misato became worried as she ducked behind
looking for her. She disappeared down the corridor as Asuka sat
there next to an unconscious Shinji.
"Well Shinji, looks like Rei's gone. I'm sure if you were
awake right now she'd still be here!" said Asuka
sarcastically. She looked down at him as he laid down face first
on the concrete.
"Hell, you probably can't even hear what I'm saying can
you?!" and she gave him a good square kick in the ribs with
her frustration. She was being taken down by the pressure yet
again. She clenched her fists hard as she fought back the urge to
go crazy. Just then Misato came bolting back around the corner,
with Rei in close succession. Asuka looked up, partly relieved,
but also irritated.
"Found her! She was lost a far way back. Think we must have
been going a bit too fast for her." Said Misato as she
gasped for air.
"Hey, what's that?" said Asuka loudly. And she pointed
to some blood on Rei's hands.
"Umm... I fell. Don't worry yourself. I will be fine."
Rei replied. But Asuka didn't buy it, and she cocked an eyebrow
while staring carefully at her. Something about Rei was strange.
She wasn't her usual dreary self. Asuka noticed that Rei had
briefly... smiled! Something that she'd never seen before. She
quickly hid her disbelief though, as a large explosion, not too
far from them, shook the floor violently. All of them froze as a
shrieking sound was heard, accompanied by loud screams, gunfire
and the sound of more spilt blood. Misato reloaded her gun as she
took a cautious step forward. Slowly, she eased herself around
the corner, fully alert. Then she witnessed a terrible sight.
There stood a now unrecognizable Matsushito. Flexing his large
armor plates, he looked over a young steward. Scared to death,
the steward began crying while the Angel peered closely at him.
Slowly, it inched its head back and raised his right hand. And at
the tips of his fingers, a long, razor sharp blade instantly
grew. Misato stood there silently. Scared and astonished, she
hardly breathed. And without thought or mercy, the Angel took one
last look at its victim, before lunging the six foot blade
through the steward's face. He became instantly decapitated as
blood splattered all over the wall behind him. The lifeless body
dropped to the floor as a pool of blood grew ever larger. Misato
screamed loudly before covering her mouth. With pinpoint hearing,
the Angel looked up. Its red eyes glowed suddenly as it watched
Misato disappear around the corner. In an instant it pursued.
Ruthlessly hunting down its prey, it followed her, sprinting
along the sides of the walls.
"OPEN THAT GOD DAMM DOOR. THAT THING'S RIGHT BEHIND
ME!" she shouted to Asuka and Rei who were sitting down
bored outside their future shelter.
"What? What are you going on about woman?" Asuka asked,
as she drowsily came to her feet. Just then she heard that same
loud shriek and watched fearfully as the Angel pursued Misato
down the long corridor.
"HOLY FUCK!" she screamed. And she instantly took to
the jarred door. With almost super-human strength, she released
the door and grinded it open.
"This way!" she pointed and Misato and Rei quickly dove
in. Grabbing Shinji by the arms, she dragged him into the small
room, before jamming the door shut again with tables, chairs and
other heavy objects.
For an hour, the Angel
relentlessly barged itself into the door. Fearing for her own
safety, Asuka continued to stack items against it. Standing there
for a moment, the Angel looked at the large metal door and with
one last shriek, it ran off.
"Few!" Misato sighed. "For a moment there, I
thought our gooses were well and truly cooked." She
exclaimed, as she wiped the sweat from her forehead.
"Best we stay here though. For the night I mean. Who knows,
maybe that thing will come back. Safer here I reckon, than
someone waltzing around out there with that predator. What do you
think Asuka?" But Asuka just sat there silently. She had
been thinking for quite some time about the former Matsushito.
She was once so madly in love with him...kinda, even though she
didn't really know how he felt about her. Now he was one of the
enemy, and here she was, hiding in the most neglected part of
NERV, fearing for her life. She pondered for a moment as she held
Shinji's hand.
"What do I do now?" she asked him silently. Just then,
he groaned. And slowly opened his eyes. "My god! Is he
awake?" and she slapped him across the face a little as he
regained consciousness.
"Out of the way Asuka. Give him some air." And Misato
carefully brought him to his feet. He slowly caught his sense of
consciousness and looked around the room.
"God, my head hurts." He spluttered. "Wouldn't
mind a bit of fresh air." And he looked towards the jarred
metal door, at a small stream of light, penetrating through the
debris. He proceeded to remove the items blocking the door, when
a hand shot in front of him.
"Don't you dare!" said Misato seriously. "That's
just what it wants." Shinji stood back alarmed. What was
'it' exactly? He turned and looked at Asuka and Rei, who were
sitting beside the wall. Rei was wearing her usual bandages.
Another accident no doubt. She looked up at him, and briefly
narrowed her eyes. He stood back rather surprised. Something
struck him as rather odd about Rei when she looked up at him. He
sensed a hint of... hostility within her! Asuka however was
looking at him drowsily, but still relieved that he was awake.
"Umm, how long have I been out for?" he asked
curiously.
"Let's see now. About three and a half hours. I think."
Asuka replied.
"Well... that doesn't seem to be too long. Err, how did I
get unconscious exactly?" he continued. Misato walked over
to him and looked him in the eyes.
"You were knocked out by a large sheet of metal. There was
an explosion of some sort and it fell on you. Remarkable you're
not dead. Afterall, that was one big sheet of titanium."
"Oh. I see. So where are we anyway? This place doesn't look
very familiar. We are in NERV aren't we?!" "We're in a
utilities room Shinji, nothing spectacular. The bottom line is
that a lot has happened since you hit the deck. But, that's only
putting it lightly." And she held her gun up at the ready.
"Time you all bedded down I
think. I know it isn't much, but if it keeps us out of harms way
it'll have to do." Said Misato to the three. She looked at
her watch. 11.00pm. And the minutes continued to slowly tick by.
She sat herself down by the door and started flicking the
magazine of her gun. Annoyingly clicking it in and out to pass
the time as she kept watch. She yawned as she took a look at her
watch again. 11.42pm. Felt like hours sitting there on the cold
concrete. Everyone else was asleep. She quietly envied them as
they snoozed away. What she'd give for some sleep. She had been
up early that day after having a bad night. So that made things
all the worse. She yawned again and placed her gun on the floor.
It was her last magazine, so she had to be careful she didn't
waste bullets on shadows, or worse still, people.
'Doesn't look like E.T's gonna make another appearance tonight.'
She thought to herself. And she lied down on the floor, trying to
grab a few hours of deep sleep. Looking at her revolver on the
ground, she began to close her eyes. Suddenly she opened them
again. Something had caught her attention. She looked closer at
her gun as it laid there. It slowly began to shake and vibrate.
As was the floor, and the ceiling, and the walls. Just like when
she was in the control room. She thought deeply for a moment
before realizing the danger. Vibration of this kind could only
mean one thing. The Angel was dissolving its way through
something hard. It was close, she could feel it. She stood up and
looked through the holes in the debris blocking the doorway.
Nothing. Where was it? She sensed it drawing towards them ever
closer, so she inserted her last magazine and cocked her gun.
Things were beginning to rattle now. She walked around the room
cautiously, pointing her gun in every which way she could. Then
suddenly... the rattling stopped. And there was a deadly silence.
She stood there for what seemed an eternity. The whole time at
full alert. Was it her imagination? Did she just dream the
rattling? Maybe she was already asleep, having a nightmare. She
pinched herself superstitiously. Just to be sure. And at that
precise moment her fears became reality. That familiar shrieking
sound blared in her ears. And almost everyone (asleep or not)
jumped up in fear. She watched the walls as they began rattling
again. Slowly she pointed her gun at the wall ahead of her. As
the shrieking continued, the wall began to glow.
"Fuck! It's coming through the damm walls! You know, this
gun won't do shit against this thing!" she said to the
others, who were all wide awake by now. "Best we get going
now! It's coming through this wall here. Move the stuff blocking
the door. Since it's dissolving through, you should be able to
get a clear run."
"No Misato. Look." Said Asuka. And she pointed to an
old door that had been partly obscured by garbage. With a creak,
it slowly wrenched open, revealing a long rising hallway. A sign
attached to the door read this: 'Emergency Geo-front Access Ramp'
"Good work Asuka." Misato complemented. "I want
you to take everyone to the surface!" Asuka gave a nod and
she began jogging up. She stopped suddenly as Shinji wouldn't
leave.
"Dammit Shinji, c'mon!" she said to him. But he
wouldn't. Instead he just stood there talking to Misato. Pleading
with her.
"Shinji I can't, honestly." Misato explained.
"When this thing breaks through it'll be too fast for all of
us. We'd all die if I followed. One of us has to stay behind to
slow it down."
"But why you?!" Shinji begged. "Shinji! I'm the
one with the bloody gun okay! Now for once in your god dammed
life, do what your tol..." but she was suddenly cut off.
Literally. Two huge blades sliced Misato's body three ways.
Shinji stared horrified as each of her limbs dropped in different
places.
"No!" he shouted loudly. And he rushed to her side as
the last drops of life eased out of her. He held her tight as a
large foot landed next to him. Looking up, he caught the gaze of
the Angel. Its bright red eyes fixating on him as it raised its
blades in preparation for attack.
"Matt!" a voice called. And the Angel turned to face
it. To Shinji's surprise, it was Asuka. Seeing that Shinji had
not followed, she had come back to find out what was happening.
"Don't do it." She said to him. The Angel looked
puzzled at her for a moment before walking closer.
"Asuka?" it began. And he rapidly returned to his
former state. Human. "I thought I'd never see you
again." And he walked closer still, now resembling the
Matsushito everyone knew.
"Thank god you're alive." He said. And he planted a
small kiss on Asuka's cheek. She fell for it instantly and gave
him a hug. "Asuka. Before you go, I must ask you. Where is
Lilith?!" and he narrowed his eyes at her. But Asuka was
clueless as to who or what Lilith was. She had never seen her
before.
Standing there puzzled, she replied. "Who is Lilith?"
And Matt stood back in shock and shook his head.
"As I thought. You know nothing of her do you?!"
"Her?" Matt seemed bitterly disappointed and moved
closer, holding his hands behind his back. Then he whispered.
"Well Asuka my dear... That's too bad." And he
lengthened the blades on both his hands without her noticing.
"So unfortunate you couldn't tell me. Goodbye."
"Asuka watch out!" shouted Shinji to her. But she was
clueless and still under Matt's romantic spell. Without warning,
he sliced her body in two. Blood spilt across the floor as Matt
personally made sure him victim was dead. Strike after strike,
mad with blood lust, he decimated her body, spreading her remains
far from the scene of the event. Shinji sat there paralyzed, and
cried as hard as he could. Returning to his Angelic state, Matt
watched him as he sobbed in the corner. Shinji met his gaze yet
again, and the two looked at each other, both with fear and with
hatred. And by some miracle. Matt turned and dissolved his way
through the walls. Shaken and scared to death, he didn't move for
another hour. Instead he cowered himself into the corner, before
regaining his composure and fleeing the scene.
As he opened the door to the
geo-front, the light blinded his eyes. The geo-front was huge and
to the untrained eye, could seem like the surface. He turned his
head in every which way looking for other survivors. However none
were visible. Just then a movement caught his eye. In the bushes
not far from him, and a young boy ran out. He was clearly scared
and backed up immediately when he saw Shinji.
"Don't worry kid. I won't hurt you." He said and he
stretched his arm out towards him. Quickly the boy shot back.
"It's coming! You have to run now." He stuttered.
"It's killing everyone. Nothing can stop it. Please, you
have to run away, you have to run now!" but right there
before him, the child's eyes went white. And a powerful particle
beam shot through his chest. He made bloodthirsty sounds as his
internal organs were instantly burning him from the inside out.
Within a few seconds the child was dead, and the middle section
of his body lied there disintegrated. And roughly a hundred feet
away, stood the Angel. Motionless and without regret, he smiled
at Shinji before disappearing yet again. Shinji swallowed hard.
Again he had witnessed someone's death. Was the Angel trying to
make him go mad?! But he wasn't scared so much though. No, he was
far beyond that. It was almost as if he was used to the sound of
murderous screams. One thing that was for sure was that the Angel
had taken everything that he had ever loved from him. And it had
to be stop. If not for the relief of his emotions, then for the
lives of everyone remaining on the planet. However, he didn't
know how. He had accidentally dropped the cage access cards into
the coolant fluid. So access to the Eva's was near impossible. He
strained his brain hard, trying to calm the hatred he held within
him. But the fact of the matter was that he couldn't. He could no
longer bear to see innocent people die at its murderous hands. He
could no longer fear for his own safety every minute of every
day. He could no longer leave someone walk free of whom had
betrayed and literally broken Asuka's heart. And so he concluded.
There was only one thing certain to him now, after everything
that had happened. The Angel, must die!
