Evangelion Unit 04

Due to an incident at Nerv's Nevada branch, which led to the apparent destruction of both the facility and Evangelion Unit 04 that was situated there, Evangelion Unit 03 was quickly sent to Nerv's Tokyo branch for final testing.

What should have been a straight forward testing procedure turned in to Nerv's nightmare, where an Angel was able to seize control of Unit 03 upon its activation, destroying the testing facility before escaping.

Evangelion Unit 03 was reclassified as an Angel, with orders issued for it to be destroyed.

Rebuild of Evangelion

Unit 03's design and role in the Rebuild films is largely the same, save for some minor colour changes. However, Unit 03 being sent to Nerv's Tokyo branch would have been in breach of the Vatican Treaty, which stipulates that no country be in possession of any more than three active Evangelions at any one time. To ensure that the Tokyo branch continued complying with the treaty, Evangelion Unit 02 was put in to cold storage, with its pilot being assigned as the test pilot of Evangelion Unit 03.

Furthermore, it was supposedly more advanced than even Unit 02, described as being enough to be the main firepower for in combating the Angels, though further details about its construction or technology are unknown.
