With the rollout of the Earth Federation's Operation V mobile suit, the RX-78-2 Gundam, there were plenty of spare parts for the purposes of repairing the Gundam. Due to the large number of spare parts available, these parts were used to produce a limited number of specialized Gundams designed to be used against Zeon forces on Earth. Thus, the RX-79 [G] Gundam Ground Type was built. Some of these units were assigned to the Kojima Battalion for use against the Zeon forces based in South East Asia.
However, because the Gundam Ground Type was built from spare parts from the RX-78-2, no replacement parts are available for repairs. Fortunately, because the Gundam Ground Type shares many of the same parts with the GM Ground Type, repairs are still possible, though this leads to customised Gundam-type mobile suits, such as the Ez-8, and the GM Head

Despite being based on the RX-78-2 Gundam, the Gundam Ground Type is also rather different. For the purpose of fighting under gravity, the Ground Type is equiped with a backpack rack, which can be used to mount parachutes, or a weapons storage container. The head vulcans are removed to install a periscope. Instead, a single vulcan gun and a multi-launcher are installed in its chest. Beam sabers that were stored in the RX-78-2's backpack are now stored in the legs. Similar to it's predecessor, the Ground Type can also equip a Beam rifle, essentially giving it the firepower of a battleship. Alternatively it can be equiped with a 100mm machine gun, or a 180mm cannon, which can be dismantled and stored in the storage container. Lastly, it can also be equipped with a small shield that not only serves as protection, but can be used as a battering weapon, or in the case of using the 180mm cannon, can serve as a makeshift stand to stabalize the weapon.

Despite being built from spare parts of the RX-78-2 Gundam, the Gundam Ground Type proves to be a capable mobile suit that can stand toe-to-toe with Zeon's mobile suits.
