Evangelion Unit 00 was developed as a prototype unit, and therefore was never intended to be utilised in any sort of combat role. Due to its status as a prototype, it is not equipped with the shoulder mounted fins that are standard in successive Evangelion units. However, it is later given a refit that would allow it to better serve in combat roles. Like most Evangelion units, it requires an external power source to operate, taking the form of an umbilical cable. While it can operate without such a cable, its internal power allows it to only operate for 5 minutes before shutdown.
When deployed to combat, Unit 00 usually takes on a supporting role when battling Angels. Rarely does Unit 00 ever take point in battle, and even when it does, it is only in extreme circumstances when only the most desperate of options remain. In either case, Unit 00 and its pilot disregard their own safety, in order to successfully carry out orders.
The portrayal of Unit 00 slightly differs between the TV series and the films. In the TV series, it's refit also includes a new blue colour scheme. The films on the other hand, includes only slight changes to it's colour scheme after it's refit in that it incorprates more gray in addition to its original orange colour
