Rei's past is shrouded in complete mystery - She has no known origins, and no known parents or relatives. All that is known is that she had been selected by the Marduke Institute to serve as an Evangelion pilot for NERV - The First Child, pilot of the prototype Evangelion Unit 00.
She is an example of the perfect soldier - she accepts and follows orders without question, and would even go so far as to take her own life if she was ordered to. This kind of soldier-like behaviour has Rei finding herself distanced from everybody else, including the other EVA Pilots. However, she interacts with Commander Gendou Ikari in a way that a parent would with their child, which suprises Gendou's own son, Shinji.
